Quelle horreur! Asterix surrenders to McDonald's

from Telegraph.co.uk:
The mustachioed warrior and his larger-than-life chum Obelix, famed for defending a village in Gaul from Roman invaders, are shown revelling in a McDonald's outlet while the village's tone-deaf bard, Cacofonix, sits outside tied to a tree, his harp by his side.

...McDonald's has pulled off a remarkably successful rebranding exercise in France. It has Frenchified its menu, takes 80 per cent of its beef from national farmers and has a stand in Paris' annual agricultural fair.

And despite the country's reputation as the birthplace of haute cuisine, the French have shown their love for the American chain with their stomachs: France is the company's second-most profitable market after the United States. It is also the country where customers spend most money per visit.

What could be more healthy or entertaining than a family treasure hunt, on bicycles, on a winter’s day? James Cracknell tries geocaching.

from telegraph.uk:
Geocaching is a hi-tech treasure hunt that is a long way from Anneka Rice, skin-tight jumpsuits and helicopters. It owes its existence to computer and GPS technologies that enable anyone to find ''treasure’’ left at specific coordinates by others.

The treasure, or ''caches’’, are normally small Tupperware or ammo boxes containing a logbook and small items for trading. At the time of writing there are 953,077 active caches in more than 100 countries on all seven continents. Locating them requires a hand-held GPS or a GPS-enabled phone.

Vatican Newspaper Praises 'The Simpsons' - Sphere News

Vatican Newspaper Praises 'The Simpsons' - Sphere News

Clearly, somebody in the Catholic Church has been paying attention to the series. In fact, the paper goes on to discuss the show in terms of its theological viewpoint, too:

"Simultaneously reflecting modern people's indifference toward and great need for the sacred, Homer ... finds his ultimate refuge in God."

The idea of the Vatican newspaper taking the time to comment on a cartoon television show is pretty unusual. In fact, it has has all the makings of a pretty good "Simpsons" episode.
