Thought blurb...Mercy Merry Go Round.

A group of us had a discussion at our church this morning about the idea that we all need God's mercy in our lives every week. That it is a universal experience that we fail as Christ followers over and over again, and that many of our failures bring a lot of emotional pain into our lives. One guy said that he has 463 songs on his Ipod from many major Christian groups and that each group has at least one popular song talking about personal failure and the need to rely on God's mercy and grace for forgiveness. In the light of the very high standard that we are called to live by it seems to me that having a firm grasp of God's mercy to us is the only way we can live without being constantly depressed. I think this is what Martin Luther was talking about when he said to "sin boldly", Not that we should work to sin but that when we do we should thank God for his mercy and move on. Just looking through our previous music posts I found these songs that at least reference Gods mercy: Kutless, DecembeRadio, Flyleaf, Waking Ashland, Seventh Day Slumber, Edison Glass, and Anberlin. I am sure there are many more. I am struck that this is a topic we ought to be talking about more. Questions I would consider are; How do I maintain a passion for obedience since God's mercy covers all? If we are persistently disobedient does it say anything about our belief? Which comes first; obedience or belief? Hmmm.
