from Clearplay: "Set in the early 1960s, Hairspray tells the story of a plus-sized girl Tracy (played exuberantly by Nikki Blonsky) who dreams of being a featured dancer on “The Corny Collins Show,” the Baltimore equivalent of “American Bandstand.” Corny Collins (James Marsden) has problems of his own, as he’d like to integrate the show’s dancers against the wishes of the producer (Michelle Pfeiffer), instead of relegating African Americans to a once-monthly appearance on Negro Day. Overall, Hairspray is a toe-tapping romp which presents a life-affirming message that it’s okay to be different and that progress occurs when we stand together.
ClearPlay has successfully filtered the suggestive innuendo from the songs. Travolta is far from divine in an over-the-top performance, but it’s still fun to see him dance."
