boingboing recommends "Do not open: An Encyclopedia of the Worlds Best Kept Secrets" They have gotten permission to excerpt a snippet about the mystery of the Mary Celeste. You can read about it here. I love these kind of books. Two others that I have read kind of like this are
"Best of the Old Northwest" True stories, anecdotes, legends and mysteries of those exciting early years. There is one story with fairly good evidence of a lost gold mine just a little ways from my home. Another book is "Desperate Journeys, Abandoned Souls" True stories of castaways and other survivors. There are some episodes in this book that are so painful to read you will never want to get on a ship or venture out into the wilderness again. Read and enjoy or give to that dangerous boy or daring girl for Christmas.
