The book of Nehemiah is essentially a story of Nehemiah and a group of Hebrews rebuilding the wall around their capital Jerusalem that had been destroyed by the Babylonians. Archaeologists have questioned the story because walls dated to Nehemiah's period have not been found. Now there is some evidence that Nehemiah's walls have been discovered. The story of Nehemiah begins when some exiles come and tell him about Jerusalem while he is the Cupbearer to the king of Persia. This is what the exiles say;
"Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire."
