from NatGeo:
What happens when a space rock hits the moon? Well, this. Thanks to new, high-resolution images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter--such as this one of a fresh crater taken September 30 and released October 11--scientists are gaining new insights into what happens during and after an impact. In this image, for example, material kicked up by the blast is bright, while newly exposed, deeper material is dark--a distinction made clearer by LRO's new orbit over the moon's equator, where sunlight tends to shine straight down onto the surface.
