blurbat: We had a most excellent guest speaker at Church today. Pastor Wes Davis from Kitsap Washington...a friend of our senior pastor, Ray Cotton. I like a lot (all) of what he said. His style was very humor-ous too.
I also like some of the things he pointed out. So Jesus goes up to Matthew, a tax collector and says follow me, and he does. He goes up to Simon Peter and says the same thing; he does the same thing. Pastor Wes asks why'd they do that? Well, in those days, the best and the brightest were selected by the Rabbis, "Follow me", everyone else went into the trades. So Matthew and Simon Peter were non-selects doing their trades. When Jesus came along, they were: "Right on, we got selected."
Pastor Wes Davis's main talking points were:
Jesus wants us to be missionaries with him...in the deep ocean - looking where the need is great.
Who does Jesus pick for his team?
1) The best repenters.
2) Those who know they need foregiveness. Jesus cares about the heart. If you don't know you are a sinner (a la the Pharises) you can't have a repentent heart; and you can't step toward righteousness.
3) Those who include those who are not yet on the mission (hang out with tax collectors).
4) Those who leave stuff behing to follow him.
